Which of These is More Offensive?

Monday, August 7, 2006
As a brief follow up to my last post and the point about nationalism, see the Liberty Bible offered by the American Bible Society. The Kruse Kronicle passes along some more partisan options for those of us who put being a Republican or a Democrat above being an American (which are both above being a Christian). For my use of the quote appearing on the GOP Bible, go here. I’m willing to bet that the Liberty Bible will sell pretty well.

Apparently it is acceptable for the ABS to offer a Bible with the Statue of Liberty and the American flag on the cover, but not one with a cover for the New Testament that said “Jesus Loves Porn Stars.” After all, “the wording is misleading and inappropriate for a New Testament,” said Barbara Bernstengel, the executive in charge of standards at the American Bible Society. It seems, though, that the cover of the Liberty Bible is neither misleading nor inappropriate.

Well, God forbid that Christians would ever associate with tax collectors and sinners!

I’m still not entirely clear on why that cover is “misleading and inappropriate.” Is the implication of that statement that there are certain people who are unable to be saved, for whom the grace of God is not great enough to cover the depth of their sin?

I think it’s more that it could be read as a divine endorsement of their profession.

But X3Church from everything I’ve seen embodies the “love the sinner, hate the sin” approach and emphasizes the “Your sins are forgiven. Go and sin no more,” law/grace relationship of the NT.

I want a Bible that says something like “Jesus loves Porn Stars”, heck, I want several swappable covers for my Bible with like-minded phrases such as that!

Jordan, my darling, the Liberty Bible is sheer genius. I’m quite embarassed I didn’t come up with something like this. It’s so good to see Christians getting their priorities in order.

The other Bible, however . . . disgusting. Inapporpriate and crass. I’m not surpised that such trash comes from XXX Church. They all need haircuts and jobs.
